I looked through my stash and was excited to discover that I could make a pretty cute quilt entirely from my pantry! I even had the backing and the batting. The only thing I had to go out and buy was the binding (which was chosen by my assistant, Gracie :) )<br />
<br />

<br />
I used the disappearing nine block 'pattern' which I have used before, but I really love the look. This is one of my favorite baby quilts - it makes me happy when I look at it! And baby Leo loved it too!<br />

My brother and his wife are expecting their first baby in early August! They aren't finding out the sex, so I wanted to make a quilt that was fun and colorful and gender neutral. I saw this quilt <a href="http://quiltstory.blogspot.com/2012/04/sues-half-moon-modern-log-cabin.html">HERE</a> and I just knew I wanted to do something similar! I used white instead of grey (my mom always gets annoyed that I use white in baby quilts but I don't care :) )</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMxLCiIGhgmnnN3HAP2GkxcKEcxtizLiaZpOQ38WHUPRHbxHkRckgvXm_w1Qa-zp3NK3gf_U47trhIrl1-Ur67hHSK4B00oIq2wC0lmbjIoT4yNVkhHD2lRlLgcePkGAi7NNyQz7Rt2skB/s1600/DSC_0074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMxLCiIGhgmnnN3HAP2GkxcKEcxtizLiaZpOQ38WHUPRHbxHkRckgvXm_w1Qa-zp3NK3gf_U47trhIrl1-Ur67hHSK4B00oIq2wC0lmbjIoT4yNVkhHD2lRlLgcePkGAi7NNyQz7Rt2skB/s320/DSC_0074.jpg" width="212" /></a></div>
<br />
I made this with mostly scraps but I did have to go out to buy some blues for the outside row... I didn't have enough!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I did some wavy free motion quilting in the whites. I think it was perfect :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
I still have a quilt for my house that is all cut up and ready to be sewn as well as a few projects I want to do, but it just may not happen... Things are crazy here at the moment!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-42343441023655861762012-04-03T11:09:00.000-07:002012-04-03T11:09:29.358-07:00Quilt for Baby NicholasMy friend Jenn just had a baby boy! But she didn't find out the sex of the baby before the birth. So I was fretting about what to do and then I just decided to make a boy quilt. I thought maybe I could masquerade it as a quilt for a girl with a different binding, but then I just decided I could save it for the next baby boy if she had a girl! I was lucky!<br />
<br />
I just decided to do a strip quilt with scraps from my stash. It's kind of interesting, and I think it looks a lot better in person with all of the different prints than through a picture. I just did straight line quilting on either side of the seams. And I used a flannel backing.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy7248Yw_TXmrnuP04l0YT119PvaNCQOf9tiCyWRnOvOnsT5bClIdDAAst6OEkguhohsndalfIEhyfhiaaiJLGQ5JgfeB14_QtA4Yh7ag79QbLPTdzw2DI4dVgWT3cATr1Q1j8KDejeKhO/s1600/DSC_0050.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhy7248Yw_TXmrnuP04l0YT119PvaNCQOf9tiCyWRnOvOnsT5bClIdDAAst6OEkguhohsndalfIEhyfhiaaiJLGQ5JgfeB14_QtA4Yh7ag79QbLPTdzw2DI4dVgWT3cATr1Q1j8KDejeKhO/s320/DSC_0050.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
I was a little annoyed because I don't pre-wash in general - I usually just use those color catcher sheets in the wash. But the dark blue bled into one of the yellow strips :( I guess I should start pre-washing, but it is just such a pain in the butt!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGSNsLEZzHWm9Z-xa0o9oCmxX_wDMj1ZDMNyXBru6fb2R37miunaVGJw8w8uxHbD3I6TaUW_v8ejMZzs7kgulIC7-HaTh1n892v0uvvuRZRqv4bj6zXV-b-z4cgoHvWUHerMIYNJqnli92/s1600/DSC_0051.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGSNsLEZzHWm9Z-xa0o9oCmxX_wDMj1ZDMNyXBru6fb2R37miunaVGJw8w8uxHbD3I6TaUW_v8ejMZzs7kgulIC7-HaTh1n892v0uvvuRZRqv4bj6zXV-b-z4cgoHvWUHerMIYNJqnli92/s320/DSC_0051.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>I still have the plus quilt as a WIP. It has been sitting for about 2 months all cut out in piles and ready to be sewn together. I don't think there are any babies coming in the next few months so hopefully I can get it together :)Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-54128392488660893632012-04-03T11:03:00.000-07:002012-04-03T11:03:36.659-07:00Catch up - pics of Gracie's quilt!I know, I have been a slacker - I finally uploaded pictures from my better camera! Here are a few pictures of Gracie's quilt. There is not one of the whole quilt because it was too muddy and it kept falling off of the clothesline because of it's size!!<br />

We took a few pictures of it with my iPhone and it went STRAIGHT onto Gracie's bed because she has been waiting so long!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE72yf4Ih9yA1rLnWmeP4tOgZUSWvQJG5t08m0K1xcr3ufHirtrDM7M2glS40KYocKaa4dM2G1aK-eetYKt33G7iAbYJ3fAb_UWZDP-kDA-PNmnAsBRptKBksM9Y4XlRbmqflxoTQi-Ane/s1600/IMG_0994.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhE72yf4Ih9yA1rLnWmeP4tOgZUSWvQJG5t08m0K1xcr3ufHirtrDM7M2glS40KYocKaa4dM2G1aK-eetYKt33G7iAbYJ3fAb_UWZDP-kDA-PNmnAsBRptKBksM9Y4XlRbmqflxoTQi-Ane/s320/IMG_0994.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><br />
I love the way it came out! I love the back (talk about anxiety!!)! I decided to do a big "X" for quilting and then repeated it to the edges. It was the first time I "marked" a quilt and sewed over the marks. Wasn't in love with the pencil I used - I need to find something better for next time!<br />
<br />

I did take some better outside pictures later on but I still didn't upload them, so they will come when I stop being a procrastinator!<br />
<br />

I'm working on a "plus" quilt now. Everything is cut and laid out (thanks, MOM!) but it's been almost 2 weeks and no sewing has been done :( It will happen eventually!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-23545429581654614032012-02-11T16:37:00.000-08:002012-02-11T16:37:53.682-08:00Up-cycled quiltMy husband put a bunch of dress shirts (really nice, really expensive dress shirts) in the pile for goodwill about 6 months ago and I just knew I had to keep them. I didn't know for what, but the fabric was just so soft and such a nice color. <br />
<br />
Enter baby Oscar, who was born a month ago. I was thinking of what I should do for his quilt, when his mom posted a picture of his nursery on her blog and I thought to myself "Self! You need to use those shirts!"<br />
<br />
So I cut them up, along with some old khakis, seersucker pants, and an old dress of Gracie's. I wasn't really sure how it was going to look, but once I had it put together I was in love! I know, it's a little weird to be gifting a quilt made of our old clothes... but it is my husband's super close friend, and they are pretty openminded, so I think it's ok :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzb-g5e3JHbTLtODrZF8d6jEoGhSpziW0XE1_eAizdDnhIlTg_GbMmDFfzcQ-E7BItLqF6gINH91pXdkpwo24tXVUz8azgoYxmZqix65cxuajGoebHHeewpsnh_bJjzSyEciAkbjqcy03z/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzb-g5e3JHbTLtODrZF8d6jEoGhSpziW0XE1_eAizdDnhIlTg_GbMmDFfzcQ-E7BItLqF6gINH91pXdkpwo24tXVUz8azgoYxmZqix65cxuajGoebHHeewpsnh_bJjzSyEciAkbjqcy03z/s320/DSC_0002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>Thanks to mom, again, for advice on the borders. I really stink at borders!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgat681mvq6-lS9dBW2AvcuZZ7Z8FQ_L6-lkW9-p_K7xlk7T4kGLXpap-sGQYjygIQc7f4jKkMTsr-Ex315JjbNmHzWyIUsy2EXPIxRpSZUKcP3PL12nA6XAEg3OBoijpykSgDTjUNyfsv_/s1600/DSC_0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgat681mvq6-lS9dBW2AvcuZZ7Z8FQ_L6-lkW9-p_K7xlk7T4kGLXpap-sGQYjygIQc7f4jKkMTsr-Ex315JjbNmHzWyIUsy2EXPIxRpSZUKcP3PL12nA6XAEg3OBoijpykSgDTjUNyfsv_/s320/DSC_0004.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>And I used quilting flannel for the first time for the backing. I really love how it felt - I'll be doing that from now on for the baby quilts I do.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7mi9WBclcAjLRNb41dAO-fB1iAaqNLAJOdYtFgzlVeDDdyK_iXpXYAn5gVO2F2jpw9YOekY0qcARSPnTCPsT8P3ipJecSO12c338dL-fsgHZhOBKN_eI7I1LFXLSdfVtKI-wS0U5BjN5P/s1600/DSC_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7mi9WBclcAjLRNb41dAO-fB1iAaqNLAJOdYtFgzlVeDDdyK_iXpXYAn5gVO2F2jpw9YOekY0qcARSPnTCPsT8P3ipJecSO12c338dL-fsgHZhOBKN_eI7I1LFXLSdfVtKI-wS0U5BjN5P/s320/DSC_0003.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
Luckily, I have a little break from baby quilts. The next baby is in March, and they aren't finding out the sex, so I have time!<br />
<br />
I have been working on Gracie's quilt. Yah, I finally decided it was time to get this out of the WIP pile. I am done with the basting and finished up the quilting today! Just have to put the binding on that baby and I'll be done! Gracie is so excited!<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
And I have my next quilt already cut out! It's one for our house, so I'm super excited!!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-22998900734882519122012-01-10T16:46:00.000-08:002012-01-10T16:46:19.464-08:00HSTs for Christmas!I made my husband's parents a quilt for Christmas! I didn't know if I would have time to get it done, but I set a schedule and stuck to it!<br />
<br />
I decided to do HSTs (Half Square Triangles) which I think take a lot of time and patience, but it's worth it with all of the different designs you can do with it! I used a solid khaki color and blues and teals. I really love the way it turned out! Inspired by Rita at <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/redpepperquilts/3715819659/in/gallery-ihavetosay-72157626046340037/">Red Pepper Quilts</a> (who I think is SO amazing!)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2euJyoYfigiMlXeaEerAr5_TFvK_YaZtGk79217Qx9i_Q4ikxhyKdzpGXV-V59Gi5Yio5Tpq63-F7C8fUmqFIijGKwMbOlADly5xU_wqZZabyV1NmBNxBS-Wz3FSWWdesurHhqu_iQCC/s1600/DSC_0002.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiO2euJyoYfigiMlXeaEerAr5_TFvK_YaZtGk79217Qx9i_Q4ikxhyKdzpGXV-V59Gi5Yio5Tpq63-F7C8fUmqFIijGKwMbOlADly5xU_wqZZabyV1NmBNxBS-Wz3FSWWdesurHhqu_iQCC/s320/DSC_0002.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I am not really into borders, so my mom helped me choose the borders (and the back - she's awesome!)<br />
<br />
I tried "stitching in the ditch" on this quilt, because I wanted it to be really soft without too much quilting. Stitching in the ditch is a huge pain and I don't think I'm cut out for it! It is so precise! If you look closely at my quilting I am not even in the ditch half of the time! Oh well! At least once it was washed and dried it got so crinkly that you can't even tell!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNwYU3B6_zhGShvcQhoaHSY6K_u8l68EUJoBa1i-f20vowSnekQRN47zZazwR7tQET2Un7yP9G64Xm4yqIXDOJIcpFB72aUsytXOcQxnALrWK4IcAkwkFjP153Mi3PMO7P8Uul7V3xXSO2/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNwYU3B6_zhGShvcQhoaHSY6K_u8l68EUJoBa1i-f20vowSnekQRN47zZazwR7tQET2Un7yP9G64Xm4yqIXDOJIcpFB72aUsytXOcQxnALrWK4IcAkwkFjP153Mi3PMO7P8Uul7V3xXSO2/s320/DSC_0003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
This is the largest quilt I have done since using my new sewing machine. I had to do the block layout at my husbands office because it was too big for any of my floor space (it measures about twin size). I had a tricky time with the basting - I did that in our computer room, but it was a really tight squeeze! If I had had more time I would have brought it back to the office!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK0T_XuaWiiWK2koAifjLqxQ6gobyrkdsR8utkUwLECK2ZSsWRV2ycL9_5uMvqfR9JpJrHN8xSVrVyfshItqthpnCycIDygFVHq6rilhtgKqiZGevNJgIcE_LxMOHuc1CpG0xWOg4yBh0d/s1600/DSC_0005.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhK0T_XuaWiiWK2koAifjLqxQ6gobyrkdsR8utkUwLECK2ZSsWRV2ycL9_5uMvqfR9JpJrHN8xSVrVyfshItqthpnCycIDygFVHq6rilhtgKqiZGevNJgIcE_LxMOHuc1CpG0xWOg4yBh0d/s320/DSC_0005.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I have one more baby quilt to do (baby overdue at this point!) and I really need to finish Gracie's quilt. Poor Gracie. That has been a WIP forever! My parents got me a gift certificate to my local sewing shop, so I'm hoping to be able to take a class, or to get some beautiful new fabric to make something that I can keep for our house!!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-38219514686920355732011-12-15T11:29:00.000-08:002011-12-15T11:29:42.812-08:00Disappearing 9 patchAnother quilt done! This one is for Gracie's preschool teacher. I'm pretty sure she doesn't read my blog so I am posting it before we give it to her next week. She is such an awesome teacher so I wanted to do something special for her. Her favorite color is teal, and I decided to do a disappearing 9 patch (the correct way, not the ridiculous way I did <a href="http://kploquilts.blogspot.com/2011/08/gracies-quilt-progress.html">Gracie's quilt!</a>)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSrIEFSq0pAKkcnL6GZpYogZdXusYTnZokyYcmUvE-g3SI1IwL_AnKlORjRbLYyvzbvTNnbuoyvVzJ-AJ6tyc7avU6GSn_paoDW-By2OcDtpaCm0nRWqbUHnVEQc_pDcuejDfwM4eBtrI5/s1600/DSC_0003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSrIEFSq0pAKkcnL6GZpYogZdXusYTnZokyYcmUvE-g3SI1IwL_AnKlORjRbLYyvzbvTNnbuoyvVzJ-AJ6tyc7avU6GSn_paoDW-By2OcDtpaCm0nRWqbUHnVEQc_pDcuejDfwM4eBtrI5/s320/DSC_0003.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
I had some teal and yellows left over from my previous quilts, so I just had to buy some blues (Hello, Black Friday!) and the border and back. For the binding I usually just use what I have and do a scrappy binding. I love the way that looks.<br />
<br />
I thought I had bought enough of the backing but I must have done my math wrong! So, in the spirit of Tim Gunn, I had to "make it work". I actually like the way it turned out, but it was a lot more work than I was planning on!!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbTF3ldlkGq7fE-7V5nyidFB3joMnJIQDhfF4SDzeA8DKvgnbCllYI0YUwjBiK0SbYP2PZHnkmK9uHC6QwD9hyKmlhltK9B29_3gkKhQ1BgKlk4C2LGomcU1_fcCY32JCRQxjGJxtC_vS/s1600/DSC_0006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTbTF3ldlkGq7fE-7V5nyidFB3joMnJIQDhfF4SDzeA8DKvgnbCllYI0YUwjBiK0SbYP2PZHnkmK9uHC6QwD9hyKmlhltK9B29_3gkKhQ1BgKlk4C2LGomcU1_fcCY32JCRQxjGJxtC_vS/s320/DSC_0006.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>I finally bit the bullet and did a stippling for the quilting of this one. I took the class so long ago and I have been too afraid to try it on an actual quilt! I couldn't decide on any other straight line quilting (besides stitching in the ditch - and that sounds so boring to me!) so I just did it. It's not perfect. But it's ok and I'm glad I did it. You can definitely see the difference from where I started to where I ended. Practice really does make perfect!<br />
<br />
<br />
And OF COURSE, Gracie was painting at the other side of the table when I was quilting, and OF COURSE it got on the back of the quilt, and OF COURSE it was cheap $1 Joann checkout line paint that isn't washable. Sigh. But, you can't really tell, and at least it's for Gracie's preschool teacher who is used to having paint on everything :p I tried to keep my cool, and Gracie kept yelling "MAMA! You ruined my project!!" Oh Gracie.<br />
<br />
Another quilt that I love! Next up is another gift quilt, probably more of a twin size, and then we have another baby on the way to some of our friends, so I'll be keeping busy!<br />
<br />
In my <i>spare time</i> (ha!) I have made an earbud holder for my earbuds and some infinity scarves (thanks Pinterest!) I have a few more scarves to do and I want to make a case for my iPhone! I love that I know how to sew and can do all of these small projects!!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-7735588518947633642011-12-04T13:29:00.000-08:002011-12-04T13:29:09.026-08:00A quilt for baby SofiaAnother good friend of mine just added to her family through the miracle of adoption! A baby girl! I love doing quilts for baby girls! She told me that they were going to decorate her room in pinks, purples, bronzes and ivory. <br />
<br />
I went to Joann Fabric on Black Friday. I know. It was CRAZY! I waited in line for an hour and a half just to get my fabric cut (I was buying for 2 quilts) and another 45 minutes to check out. But it was an extra 25% off your entire order, so I think it was worth my time :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil_whtFtIzuw5UXEItmZyqgUL8yd9peYpvHNGgsJGhmGpiVHIvGjZRhWBy5j6QUsagXQFDOsSunISSNYApGA7tQwTt029glkikzAeOXpAdQs2S9iHjm9LwjE7tdszYf6lssVGJ8Xp5Y8R9/s1600/DSC_0020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil_whtFtIzuw5UXEItmZyqgUL8yd9peYpvHNGgsJGhmGpiVHIvGjZRhWBy5j6QUsagXQFDOsSunISSNYApGA7tQwTt029glkikzAeOXpAdQs2S9iHjm9LwjE7tdszYf6lssVGJ8Xp5Y8R9/s320/DSC_0020.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>I used a pattern I purchased from <a href="http://www.ohfransson.com/">Oh, Fransson!</a> (I love her blog). It is called <a href="http://www.ohfransson.bigcartel.com/product/new-wave-quilts-modern-patchwork-pdf-pattern">New Wave Quilt</a>. I bought it when she was having a 50% off sale (because I am so frugal :p) This was an awesome pattern - so easy to follow and this quilt came together really fast (2 days. I was a machine.)<br />
<br />

I wasn't really sure how I felt about it until after I had done the final wash. Now I really am in love with it. And I'm happy to report Heidi and baby Sofia are in love with it too!<br />

I already started a lap quilt for Gracie's preschool teacher for Christmas - I'm just doing a disappearing 9 block, but I am having a hard time getting myself motivated! I am also working on some other small Christmas gifts! Hopefully more updates to come soon!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-48870105040279580122011-11-20T17:09:00.000-08:002011-11-20T17:09:48.805-08:00I'm back! And a baby quilt for TheoYes, it has been a long time since I have posted! I have good excuses! We were in Disney - and while we were there got to extend our trip by 5 more days! Then when we got home we adopted a puppy! Beautiful Jasmine (yup, we're a Disney family all the way). She is a black standard poodle (no shedding - yay!) The first few weeks were very time consuming - I had to watch Jasmine every second - so there was very little sewing going on! <br />
<br />
But, some exciting things happened at the end of October. Two of my friends were blessed to be chosen as adoptive Mamas (within 2 days of each other - I was so stressed!) Baby Theo was born and placed with a very good friend of mine from college and 2 days later Baby Sofia was born and placed with my friend in Florida! So I had to get moving on some quilts!<br />
<br />
I chose a "wonky log cabin" block for baby Theo's quilt. His mom loves bright colors, so I chose orange and teal. I bought the fabric a while ago, I just couldn't decide on the design. This quilt was a major labor of love. I don't know if I'll be doing this design again any time soon! Ironing after every seam was very tedious. But, I finally finished it and I really love how it turned out! Another one that my husband says he wishes could be kept at our house :)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvGQek5MqxOJaiAGJGrJ1ZN2d2a-6blk5M0HgU1DMBEWzjvgM9dpICPBRU8Gt6nFLlhrkvW4sStl4SSyV__9kYhc9YodJEaatde13M7OphIy9kHeeHVZu44_ejePe7zqOTxjVQBGml6N0G/s1600/DSC_0005.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvGQek5MqxOJaiAGJGrJ1ZN2d2a-6blk5M0HgU1DMBEWzjvgM9dpICPBRU8Gt6nFLlhrkvW4sStl4SSyV__9kYhc9YodJEaatde13M7OphIy9kHeeHVZu44_ejePe7zqOTxjVQBGml6N0G/s320/DSC_0005.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />

I already decided on a design for Sofia's quilt, and I know the colors I want - I am going out on Black Friday to get some deals on fabric! Also on the docket is a lap quilt for Gracie's preschool teacher for Christmas and another quilt I need to finish for Christmas time too! I also have a few homemade gifts I want to make too... I better get moving :)<br />
<br />
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-32078138682454220912011-10-03T11:47:00.000-07:002011-10-03T11:47:15.696-07:00Touch Pad coverMy husband recently bought an HP Touch Pad. He has been asking me to make him a cover, and I had done the research and picked the fabric... I just hadn't done it yet!<br />
<br />
So we were just hanging around yesterday, having a lazy Sunday and it was the perfect time to do this project!<br />
<br />
I used a mix of tutorials: <a href="http://www.modabakeshop.com/2010/05/ipad-sleeve-three-ways.html">This one from Moda Bake shop</a> and <a href="http://thecottagehome.blogspot.com/2010/10/laptop-kindle-i-pad-sleeve-tutorial.html">this one from The Cottage Shop</a><br />
<br />
I used scraps for the outside, a piece of warm and white for the batting, and a piece of an old dress shirt of Gregg's for the lining (I know, I know, I'm so resourceful). It was also my first time doing free motion quilting on any project. I had to start over and rip out some of it, but it ended up coming out pretty good! I do need to play a little bit with the tension on my machine and the speed while free motion quilting. I guess that is just going to take some practice!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxtgNMmJ-fIKpd69WlQ2BK4IS-yyb18lX8LHCrxOOsJq5YzUq9LGhIhXuAMT9E5LInXaItB0mnvLiyLRTud3kXXb-FT-mKHqWFkrZSrDnEjlfpE68J6ngRcC75oNNgFDM1Art0dAU2jfHu/s1600/DSC_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhxtgNMmJ-fIKpd69WlQ2BK4IS-yyb18lX8LHCrxOOsJq5YzUq9LGhIhXuAMT9E5LInXaItB0mnvLiyLRTud3kXXb-FT-mKHqWFkrZSrDnEjlfpE68J6ngRcC75oNNgFDM1Art0dAU2jfHu/s320/DSC_0009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
So now the new touchpad is ready for our Disney Vacation!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsZug2n0DNVx0mn5OId9DGrIoyK-SH2RjbTiLeLvzH0zwirmxyJ8YIPOC1sRLXYI0ZHhZq5hFHkges9eUCWzJjn-8L6t8A49waPlx1cy-85NXI-DiUIgu-yxttiyIhr4gEAM-19xOPhekO/s1600/DSC_0012.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsZug2n0DNVx0mn5OId9DGrIoyK-SH2RjbTiLeLvzH0zwirmxyJ8YIPOC1sRLXYI0ZHhZq5hFHkges9eUCWzJjn-8L6t8A49waPlx1cy-85NXI-DiUIgu-yxttiyIhr4gEAM-19xOPhekO/s320/DSC_0012.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-79020148289348615482011-09-27T11:50:00.000-07:002011-09-27T11:50:58.146-07:00A quilt for baby girl!A friend of ours just had a baby girl! I was making her a "gender neutral" quilt because she wasn't finding out the sex of the baby in advance. But as soon as I found out it was a girl I decided to make a "girly" quilt, because everyone I know is having a boy or not finding out the sex!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHojCShqEq9P7e_MH-IQMp-xdKXqSEBzCEWGS47Iqo6pT1GlixjRIIbvNh-d0nuntdoyPlAO4hKnitFmhRDBgeFVl54UF45s-ehEB2qVmJ37_J-B_PClqDXOeYwmIImzdd-3xl8IuUPUy/s1600/DSC_0129.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipHojCShqEq9P7e_MH-IQMp-xdKXqSEBzCEWGS47Iqo6pT1GlixjRIIbvNh-d0nuntdoyPlAO4hKnitFmhRDBgeFVl54UF45s-ehEB2qVmJ37_J-B_PClqDXOeYwmIImzdd-3xl8IuUPUy/s320/DSC_0129.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>I did another zig-zag quilt, because I am temporarily obsessed with them. Pink and grey. Another quilt I love so much and had such a hard time parting with!<br />
<br />
And I was SO excited to find this black fabric for the backing at Joann's. It is just perfect!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikdIO9YBRPip0KzeYqbXILNdg0ISkbulyxGIc70gj2npe1gq4XkJKCrVe4XJoNMDtS-YEQd-HvriKQIibLVl5oVt7cuyWTiJczYC0iNb5fvkrePcrWbyb9dAIO2CXCuI-TdDj2HVy1-d9T/s1600/DSC_0130.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikdIO9YBRPip0KzeYqbXILNdg0ISkbulyxGIc70gj2npe1gq4XkJKCrVe4XJoNMDtS-YEQd-HvriKQIibLVl5oVt7cuyWTiJczYC0iNb5fvkrePcrWbyb9dAIO2CXCuI-TdDj2HVy1-d9T/s320/DSC_0130.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I did straight line machine quilting on both sides of the zig zag seams in pink cotton thread. I really love the effect... I am so glad that I started machine quilting. I still have yet to do free motion quilting, but that is coming. Just trying to get up my nerve! And all of these pictures are post-machine washing, so it is all nice and crinkly!<br />
<br />

We leave for Disney in 9 days! Just finished a Bambi dress for Gracie and still need to do the Princess Tiana dress! Almost done with our Pirate Costumes, too, I need to find a child size pirate hat to complete Gracie's costume! I'll do a separate post on the Disney dresses and Pirate costumes when I am done with all of them!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-67848369727167309332011-09-21T16:37:00.000-07:002011-09-21T16:37:10.719-07:00Finally done with a quilt!I finally finished my first quilt on my new sewing machine - and I am in LOVE with it! It is the first quilt I ever machine quilted and I really like how it turned out!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRHt-wdVdKZKp2mWgvbQMcxHY11IjBGl_1yfX3BBomVzMOLOyLZJvHp76Pv3nar5-UFq7wmsnwrPs72WGwlSDwQP2s3vo5jyaYAhrmNNxhZUdvezb2AZ0B0jz6nOzRCtL1rABLzgVzDrwe/s1600/DSC_0131.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRHt-wdVdKZKp2mWgvbQMcxHY11IjBGl_1yfX3BBomVzMOLOyLZJvHp76Pv3nar5-UFq7wmsnwrPs72WGwlSDwQP2s3vo5jyaYAhrmNNxhZUdvezb2AZ0B0jz6nOzRCtL1rABLzgVzDrwe/s320/DSC_0131.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
I used the safety pin method for basting... I may need to use 505 spray for my daughters quilt because that would be a lot of safety pins!<br />

<br />
I just used my walking foot and straight stitched along the zigzags in the white with white thread. It worked really well and am excited to try some other machine quilting!<br />
<br />
I love love love the "crinkly" look that the quilt got after being machine washed. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMSE_MhIVg0zaUQzwOFHtcs-sHdLOeGlcVNWmS1s5bX2RkHbsja-CPV-IRwM5VTWavWda1dsKWDoaQiR0Ec3JQI0Y5Wp1_W2PsJ-YONCgvSzfBZjcyasNKzUICxJ-x2sxSHgew-1nJgAKS/s1600/DSC_0137.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMSE_MhIVg0zaUQzwOFHtcs-sHdLOeGlcVNWmS1s5bX2RkHbsja-CPV-IRwM5VTWavWda1dsKWDoaQiR0Ec3JQI0Y5Wp1_W2PsJ-YONCgvSzfBZjcyasNKzUICxJ-x2sxSHgew-1nJgAKS/s320/DSC_0137.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And I made a tag for this quilt - the first time I've done that. I'd really like to get some professional looking tags, but this will do for now!<br />
<br />

I have lots on my plate now. Working on another zigzag quilt now (pink and grey) for a baby girl that was just born. I am really into zig zag at the moment! Also we're leaving for Disney in 2 weeks and I have 2 dresses to make for my daughter and our Halloween costumes for the Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party. We are all going as pirates!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-49819022697038850102011-09-09T06:32:00.000-07:002011-09-12T18:18:16.661-07:00What have I been up to?Well, I made a few "Disney" dresses for two of Gracie's friends that will be going to Disney this month!<br />
<br />
The first was for Amelia - she wanted Princess Tiana fabric (and now that Gracie has seen it, SHE wants a Princess Tiana dress for our trip, even though she doesn't even know who Princess Tiana is!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho8c8uu4TNgTq8hSz_vdkjHLxT1ZaEge-auhTPd8qsrd3DRY41byC_WNZ6q5mPjtU_Uxf8uF5sRD4QKzCcAhBjfKsMQbnVmK5eJHWskNIUqf37iXAGQ0TN5b6J0ywQK1PeyAXOi3J2C0Po/s1600/IMG_0311.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEho8c8uu4TNgTq8hSz_vdkjHLxT1ZaEge-auhTPd8qsrd3DRY41byC_WNZ6q5mPjtU_Uxf8uF5sRD4QKzCcAhBjfKsMQbnVmK5eJHWskNIUqf37iXAGQ0TN5b6J0ywQK1PeyAXOi3J2C0Po/s320/IMG_0311.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>And another Cars dress, for my dear friend Mesa's daughter Emily! They are having a Cars party for Emily's little brother and this will be a perfect outfit for the party! Plus they will be at Disney the same week we are, so we are looking forward to a little photo shoot in Emily and Gracie's dresses.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRfRWEOzH8uLDIOm951mWa6AVlwzhtx9VpHLHD2ihsxIpgNY6hJiLN6wCukWnESp_PfOiswKYPDTOVShl5hhc44azTPYHeTSFyyLV0VHqq4X9i3fbfCtPs6a4OqPe7BUkR3T4-_hg96vQ/s1600/DSC_0004.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfRfRWEOzH8uLDIOm951mWa6AVlwzhtx9VpHLHD2ihsxIpgNY6hJiLN6wCukWnESp_PfOiswKYPDTOVShl5hhc44azTPYHeTSFyyLV0VHqq4X9i3fbfCtPs6a4OqPe7BUkR3T4-_hg96vQ/s320/DSC_0004.jpg" width="212" /></a></div><br />
<br />
I just finished a baby quilt top for a friend of ours who is due in less than two weeks. She isn't finding out the gender of the baby, so I was racking my brain on what to do for a quilt. I just LOVED the zigzag quilt at <a href="http://www.cluckclucksew.com/2011/05/other-zig-zag.html#comments">Cluck Cluck Sew</a>, and I used that as my inspiration! I am also going to do the zig zag straight line quilting, and it will be my first time... So I am nervous and hoping it turns out well!<br />
<br />

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Sorry, another iPhone picture!<br />
This quilt is so vibrant and beautiful in person, when I do my "finished" pics I will use my Nikon!</td></tr>

It has been raining pretty heavily since sometime before we woke up this morning! I am reading on Facebook of all of the flooding and power outages in our area, but we have been lucky so far! <br />
<br />
Luckily, a rainy day is a great time to sew :) I <i>finally</i> finished the top of Gracie's quilt (I think I will save pictures until I am completely done with it). I also sewed up half of the back of the quilt. I am going for a patchwork kind of look. The quilt is so big that I would have had to piece fabrics together to cover the whole back, so I figured, why not do something fun! I need to get some more fabric, and batting - but that will have to wait for hubby's payday later in the week. This new hobby of mine isn't free!<br />
<br />
I took the most <i>amazing</i> class yesterday at <a href="http://www.tigerlilyquiltco.com/">Tiger Lily Quilt Shop</a> on Free Motion Quilting. This is something I really wanted to get into. I think it gives a finished quilt such an interesting look. I was very intimidated, but it turns out it is not really that hard! It is just like drawing, except you're using your sewing machine! The instructor, <a href="http://www.itzaluludesigns.com/index.html">Luanne Corts</a>, was so knowledgable and informative. I really loved her attitude towards quilting! Basically, to do what you love - it might not be perfect, but it will be yours and it will be beautiful :) She brought some of her samples, and they were truly spectacular - hopefully with some practice someday I might be half as good as her!<br />
<br />
Here are just a few pics of my first time free motion quilting! Yes - I am going to go for it and free motion quilt Gracie's quilt. Lu assured me it could be done! I figured it will be good practice since it is such a huge quilt, and when I get around to the baby quilts I will be an old pro!<br />

To be honest, I was getting so sick of looking at this fabric, but now that it is (partially) finished, I am really loving this color combination and design! I'm hoping to finish the rest of the top this weekend, and then decide how I am going to quilt it!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9rwJVVZIzltbsguL6Mj4C5zx_OrYTnRcnQotOSmzIea-0OrjLuDhNpaEd9Pc8laiE4aHu68eMIVhGfh0Uv5LX6aLuzH23N-_uhxbItSQ69Tg6qqWR7OXamTsP7sMCm-jRcGVnaVmGOSF_/s1600/IMG_0285.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj9rwJVVZIzltbsguL6Mj4C5zx_OrYTnRcnQotOSmzIea-0OrjLuDhNpaEd9Pc8laiE4aHu68eMIVhGfh0Uv5LX6aLuzH23N-_uhxbItSQ69Tg6qqWR7OXamTsP7sMCm-jRcGVnaVmGOSF_/s320/IMG_0285.JPG" width="239" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">We were supposed to go visit my family in Massachusetts this weekend, but everyone is very nervous about the upcoming hurricane, so we cancelled our trip. I stopped into my local quilt shop yesterday and signed up for a free motion machine quilting class on Saturday! I am so excited! I also bought 3 new feet for my sewing machine (1/4" foot, walking foot, free motion quilting foot). </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

For those who don't know me, I'm Kristy! I'm a stay at home mom to my daughter, Gracie and I have been sewing pretty much all of my life, thanks to the influence of my mother! (And I love exclamation points and parenthesis. I apologize in advance if that drives anyone crazy!)<br />
<div><br />
</div><div>I really want to get more into quilting (I just did my first hand stitched baby quilt and would like to move into machine quilting) and this blog will be a way for me to document both my progress and the new things I want to try. Along with some other crafts here and there :) I love reading other quilting and crafting blogs, and I hope some of you can draw some inspiration from my blog as I have from others!</div><div><br />
</div><div>Here is a picture of the first quilt I ever made! I must have been 10 years old (obviously from this color palette!) Gracie sleeps with this on her bed now (at the time we were using it for a picnic blanket). I can't believe this thing is still around, although it has seen better days!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTQRYIz63_ZuXgAFHb7OClDtvBBFpatRWWyY3Ywv-2v7HgEwoHrk-MPT6nv-bszbLpG04gRx_zEmQh6eTgbIZ1qngggWqoPUMjtXmpNPmrWgYSCMDldMLLAW4Z6lEDiEXj-X-LD-uV2eyg/s1600/IMG_0055.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTQRYIz63_ZuXgAFHb7OClDtvBBFpatRWWyY3Ywv-2v7HgEwoHrk-MPT6nv-bszbLpG04gRx_zEmQh6eTgbIZ1qngggWqoPUMjtXmpNPmrWgYSCMDldMLLAW4Z6lEDiEXj-X-LD-uV2eyg/s320/IMG_0055.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size: x-small;">(Gracie at 1 year old)</span></i></div></div><div><br />
I have done probably a dozen quilts over the years, but of course I don't have <i>(or can't find!)</i> pictures of any of them, oh well, at least I will have this documented from now into the future!<br />
<br />
</div><div>More posts to come... I have had a few in my head so I just need to take pictures and post!</div>Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-75514599540892636112011-08-22T10:57:00.001-07:002011-08-22T12:16:01.850-07:00Fabric for my next projectIt's going to be a baby quilt! I think I have decided on a design, I'll share the progress as I go!!<br />

She loves the movie, she loves the characters, she loves the toys. And that's fine with me. I am glad she is not into the whole princess scene. But they really do not sell any girl clothes with the Cars characters on them!<br />
<br />
I went to Salvation Army the other day and scored these sheets for 49 cents! Do you know how much they charge for Disney fabrics at Joann's? A lot more than that! So I washed this fabric and set off to make Gracie a dress.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div>I just used an old tank top of Gracie's, gathered the material for a skirt, and put a wide band at the waist to hide all of the seams :) Next time I will take pictures through the process - but I was too excited to get at my new machine! I also kept the tank top full length under the dress so that the gather of fabric at the waist doesn't irritate her. We are going to Disney in October, so I know she will love to wear this to the parks one day! I also have plans to make her some kind of Winnie the Pooh outfit!<br />
<br />

I got this Brother machine as a gift from my parents when I was 10. So it is 20+ years old, and not very well taken care of (it's never been serviced). But it has served me well over the past 20 years as I have been and on-again / off-again quilter and crafter.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5TSBSrOkjravYIenqzqCHLYBfhwpD3ihC5OuveRfLsAQa0l_Xzgl7i-iLPBcz2vJAb2BxafFILUlVU93rrYoFcBk9_-ya1Mz5sOS6PTSmcJLkjhLWNcrKcXHVi-osymSP0fNe0a22GQln/s1600/DSC_0049.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5TSBSrOkjravYIenqzqCHLYBfhwpD3ihC5OuveRfLsAQa0l_Xzgl7i-iLPBcz2vJAb2BxafFILUlVU93rrYoFcBk9_-ya1Mz5sOS6PTSmcJLkjhLWNcrKcXHVi-osymSP0fNe0a22GQln/s320/DSC_0049.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I went into my <a href="http://www.tigerlilyquiltco.com/">local quilt shop</a> (for the first time - I didn't even realize our city had one!) to talk to the owner, Donna, about what kind of machine I should be looking for. Donna was so very nice and helpful, and there was a class going on while I was there, and the women were so friendly - I will definitely be back for supplies and will be taking a few classes too!<br />
<br />
I told Donna the types of things I would like to do with my new machine (mainly piecing quilts and machine quilting) and she said the machine most of her customers use and recommend is the Bernina Aurora 440QE (Quilters Edition). Great, how much does it cost? $2900. I think my husband might have a heart attack if I came home with a machine that cost so much! After all, my job only gets paid in hugs and kisses (which is great, but I can't buy a machine with hugs and kisses - can I??)<br />
<br />
Donna called her supplier in Syracuse to see if he had any refurbished machines, and he reminded her that she had the Bernina Bernette 46 sitting right on her shelf that would be perfect for me - at a perfect price point - $199! My husband happily agreed to buy this as my early birthday gift! I am so excited to have a new machine - and it is SO quiet! I can actually get some sewing done when Gracie is napping and asleep for the night! And did I mention how cute it is??<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUw5D_viapcFjZua5Ny2y-KFEYh39f1gemiRNkYo9oniw6UoakmQSm1mpIIPO_-WjdDERELJaAuJIZZ9ejsiDCIJcg_SMotz3biBesFrQloWtKzSK7j7ieKnN9OeRV4quQkgeMdTGgvEcT/s1600/DSC_0055.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUw5D_viapcFjZua5Ny2y-KFEYh39f1gemiRNkYo9oniw6UoakmQSm1mpIIPO_-WjdDERELJaAuJIZZ9ejsiDCIJcg_SMotz3biBesFrQloWtKzSK7j7ieKnN9OeRV4quQkgeMdTGgvEcT/s320/DSC_0055.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Someday, if I get <i>really</i> into quilting, maybe I will upgrade to a used QE, but for now I will be enjoying my new Bernette!<br />
<br />
Thanks, Donna, for all of your help!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-72718368399443076352011-08-22T10:33:00.001-07:002011-08-22T12:16:01.868-07:00Gracie's quilt - progressThe whole time I was making the baby quilt, my three year old kept asking "When are you going to make MY quilt? Are you done with the baby quilt YET??" Yes, I am finally done! Gracie and went through my stash and ventured out to the fabric store to choose colors for her quilt. We decided on pinks (of course), teals, greens, oranges and yellows (did we miss any colors?!?). I decided to make a HUGE quilt for her double size bed so that it will hide the sides of her bed. <br />
<br />
Well, I saw a pattern I really liked, so I figured out how to make the blocks. Did I mention it is 143 blocks?? It took me a long time to sew and cut these blocks. About half way through I started reading some quilting blogs, and found out the pattern I had decided on has a name - it's called the "disappearing 9 block". And the blocks are super easy to make. I could have been done hours and hours ago. <i>Sigh.</i> I guess it pays to do a little research first!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhAsc1qWZuCAsdyJMqcbyIFjnUyddJwonuGuZLE6alAW0ifUn49QmfGc_l7qw5JyKOTBfgOMVGQ1quYCahQgzh_vSLTfQXtqFzi0BgzjvS6EnI1DiCopo6Sg7LyFR41Tn3ij6BfrtGncG/s1600/DSC_0036.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiOhAsc1qWZuCAsdyJMqcbyIFjnUyddJwonuGuZLE6alAW0ifUn49QmfGc_l7qw5JyKOTBfgOMVGQ1quYCahQgzh_vSLTfQXtqFzi0BgzjvS6EnI1DiCopo6Sg7LyFR41Tn3ij6BfrtGncG/s320/DSC_0036.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
But, I <i>finally</i> finished the blocks and now they are waiting in a pretty pile, to be squared off. I haven't started the process, because I know it is going to take a long time. And I have 5 baby quilts to make in the next two months... so I don't know how much Gracie's quilt is going to be put on the back burner.<br />
<br />
Oh, and did I mention I really want to machine quilt this monster? Maybe she will see this quilt by <i>next</i> winter!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2255533819910536270.post-66081220593858744782011-08-22T10:19:00.001-07:002011-08-22T12:16:01.873-07:00Baby Quilt for AshtonOne of my friends from book club was pregnant with her second boy and I just really wanted to make a quilt for her! I found this awesome tutorial at <a href="http://www.wheneightcreate.com/2011/03/whirlygig-baby-quilt-tutorial.html">When Eight Create</a> that I decided I wanted to use.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG5RzNXGunJimcLZr86ySXbITOvcg8Kx7Kt35PH2BQZn7RcloCHiwYbP0R3AGRqp1UJbuTqEpFsROeJH_2RhDovokISCpjhTuC6X3ZEbWxECs0Eo-wemHhcSgk_PVvB0rBxK0PE7Tux0UG/s1600/DSC_0001.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhG5RzNXGunJimcLZr86ySXbITOvcg8Kx7Kt35PH2BQZn7RcloCHiwYbP0R3AGRqp1UJbuTqEpFsROeJH_2RhDovokISCpjhTuC6X3ZEbWxECs0Eo-wemHhcSgk_PVvB0rBxK0PE7Tux0UG/s320/DSC_0001.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
Well, I love the way the quilt ended up - made entirely with scraps (from mom's stash!) except for the white background. I think if I were every to try this design again, I would make the squares bigger (these squares were TINY!) and I loved the square border, but it was just giving me a little bit of trouble. It was my own fault - my 1/4" seams are a bit bigger than 1/4" so everything didn't line up quite right. I just ordered a 1/4" foot for my machine, so that should help me in the future!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr0mOCarI17bWJ9asArMdaJ8G8A2L5JuHigPsOzCOP24XHigE1I-xlUejOTswjVXDSfL39cGsvo_fhM9kmFtr6WA4rT2a9iVc2wGzLCpzmj3CFzigKesyrThPI2ie5NkZhHurPwFSOZcLd/s1600/DSC_0009.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhr0mOCarI17bWJ9asArMdaJ8G8A2L5JuHigPsOzCOP24XHigE1I-xlUejOTswjVXDSfL39cGsvo_fhM9kmFtr6WA4rT2a9iVc2wGzLCpzmj3CFzigKesyrThPI2ie5NkZhHurPwFSOZcLd/s320/DSC_0009.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
I hand quilted this with white embroidery floss in the white background. My mom said I should stick to the white-on-white since it was my first time! I love hand sewing, and it did take several nights to finish. I would definitely hand embroider again, but only on a baby quilt!!!<br />
<br />
It was also the first time I hand sewed my binding, and it really does make a difference to the finished look of the quilt! I will only be doing hand stitched bindings in the future.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEian4nQjsTg33dpmQRZ72cRXSx0aZoekmtRL5XvMqVqzJp1YIkPESyfXm1BdwMuus9Ea4Urf42zuw3HglYIAeysbGYm_z32EEEgDvYzTdLoAiUlBfI9OSOx1f0DEaFJD5QFaM9J0GcE50_U/s1600/DSC_0003.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEian4nQjsTg33dpmQRZ72cRXSx0aZoekmtRL5XvMqVqzJp1YIkPESyfXm1BdwMuus9Ea4Urf42zuw3HglYIAeysbGYm_z32EEEgDvYzTdLoAiUlBfI9OSOx1f0DEaFJD5QFaM9J0GcE50_U/s320/DSC_0003.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><br />
And my friend and new baby boy loved the quilt, so that's all that mattered!Kristyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11597616293668220489noreply@blogger.com1
